Waterfront Promenade

About the Work

Waterfront Promenade trades crisp daylight for the violet hush of dusk along the city's seafront walk. A weathered sign names 'Vancouver's Waterfront Promenade', strings of national flags flutter over a milling crowd, a big screen flickers across the boardwalk, and the downtown skyline smoulders gold and indigo across the inlet. In the foreground a great reddish medallion is worked into the pavement in broad, loose strokes.

This is the most freely painted canvas in the collection, its impressionist handling letting figures and reflections dissolve into pure colour. Pius lets the brush wander, trusting atmosphere over precision, so the promenade feels remembered rather than recorded — the warm blur of an evening among strangers who, for one summer, felt like neighbours.

Process & Technique

Pius works alla prima, painting the whole scene in one charged session while the colours stay mobile. Broken strokes of plum, slate and amber are dragged into one another so the dusk light seems to vibrate, and the foreground medallion is scraped in with the side of the knife, its rough impasto deliberately unresolved to keep the eye moving.
