About the Work

The Final Whistle freezes the instant of release, when ninety minutes of tension break into pure noise. A vast 'CANADA' banner unfurls across the foreground stands, a single flag snaps overhead, and the terraces dissolve into a churning field of red and gold beneath a sky set ablaze with sunset and heavy impasto cloud. The 'Vancouver 2026' script rides the top of the canvas like a headline.

Pius paints emotion here rather than detail. Individual fans melt into gestural daubs, the energy of the crowd carried by the rhythm of the brushwork itself. It is the most operatic piece in the collection — a study of collective elation that needs no single hero, because the crowd is the protagonist.

Process & Technique

Worked at speed and wet-into-wet, the canvas is dominated by palette-knife slashes that keep the crowd loose and kinetic. Pius drags a loaded knife of cadmium red and white across the stands, then flicks bright accents over the top, letting the raised impasto ridges throw tiny shadows that make the multitude seem to shift and seethe.
