March to Canada Place

About the Work

March to Canada Place walks with the supporters on the morning of a match. Seen from behind, three fans crest an overpass: one thrusts up a hand-lettered '2026 Vancouver Championship' placard crowned with a maple-leaf football, another marches in canary yellow, and the third — México 10 across his green shirt — raises a star-spangled flag overhead. Before them the white sails and rigging of Canada Place fill the sky, tangled with cables and gulls, while gold-lit cloud breaks over the mountains to the left and glass towers climb to the right.

It is a painting about pilgrimage — the continental sweep of the 2026 tournament condensed into three sets of shoulders headed the same direction. Pius keeps the fans anonymous so that every viewer joins the march, one more body in the current flowing toward the waterfront.

Process & Technique

Acrylic on canvas with the figures modelled in thick, sculptural impasto — jersey colours laid on in unbroken slabs so they carry across a room. The sails and rigging behind are drawn with a knife-edge and fine liner over softly brushed cloud, setting crisp architecture against a melting dawn sky.
