Match Night at the Totems gathers the city's oldest storytellers and its newest spectacle into one twilight clearing. At left the totem poles of Stanley Park rise against a churning violet dusk — carved wings, watchful faces, cedar reds deepened by the failing light. At right, among the evergreens, a broadcast screen pours emerald light over families settled on log benches, while beyond the treeline the towers of the West End glitter awake. Swallows cut through the last orange tear in the clouds.

Pius handles the pairing with care: the poles are given the high ground and the richer colour, presiding over the evening rather than decorating it. The match arrives as a guest in the grove. The result is a nocturne about continuity — new stories told by screenlight at the feet of the ones that were here first.

Process & Technique

Worked in acrylic on canvas, the totems are built up in layered impasto of cedar red, ochre and near-black, their carvings suggested by knife-edge shadows. The dusk sky swirls in wet-blended violets behind, and the screen's green glow is scumbled thinly over the crowd so the light appears to fall on them rather than from them.
