About the Work

Match Day at BC Place places the tournament's beating heart at the centre of the city. The stadium's pale, ribbed dome swells beside the downtown towers, 'MATCH DAY' banners hang from the surrounding plazas, and a triumphal arch crowned with the championship trophy frames a river of supporters streaming toward the gates. Totem poles rise at the left edge, rooting the global spectacle in the land it stands on, while ferries and a pleasure boat cross the inlet below a mountain-ringed horizon.

Pius packs the canvas with incident — flags of many nations, a 'Vancouver Host City' standard, clouds worked in heavy white impasto — yet keeps the eye moving along the curving waterfront toward the stadium. It is a painting about convergence: the moment a whole city turns and points itself in one direction.

Process & Technique

This is the most densely worked cityscape in the series. Pius establishes the architecture with firm knife-laid planes, then stipples thousands of small marks for the crowd and signage. The stadium dome is built up in pale grey impasto so its ridges physically catch the light, lifting it forward from the flatter, thinly painted mountains behind.
