About the Work

Brockton Point Oval looks toward the storied playing fields at the tip of Stanley Park, reimagined as a stage for the festival summer. A broad green oval fills the foreground, ringed by spectators and a single oversized maple-leaf flag, while behind them the forest gives way to open water, anchored ships and the familiar silhouette of the mountains. A banner overhead carries the 'Vancouver 2026' script in the artist's looping hand.

Where other pieces in the collection roar, this one hums. Pius bathes the field in the long gold of a West Coast evening and lets the crowd settle into quiet anticipation. The result is a pastoral counterpoint to the stadium scenes — a reminder that the tournament lived as much in the city's parks and ovals as it did under its floodlights.

Process & Technique

Pius keys the canvas to dusk, scumbling warm gold and rose into the sky over a darker underpainting before working the crowd and treeline in short, dabbed strokes. The grassy oval is laid in with sweeping knife-work, its impasto ridges raked to mimic mown turf, while the distant water is kept thin and smooth to push it back into depth.
