About the Work

The Fan Zone distills the communal joy of Vancouver's 2026 host-city summer into a single sunlit gathering. A crowd of supporters fans out across a waterfront plaza, jerseys and hand-held flags forming a restless quilt of red and white, while tournament banners and a viewing area rise above the throng. Beyond them the harbour glitters with seaplanes and pleasure craft, and the dark green wall of the North Shore mountains anchors the scene beneath a sky brushed in warm amber.

Pius treats the gathering not as a portrait of any one fan but as a portrait of belonging. Figures are built from short, confident strokes, their faces left impressionistic so that any visitor might imagine themselves among them. The painting reads as a folk hymn to a city in celebration — the kind of ordinary, euphoric afternoon a whole country remembers years later.

Process & Technique

Pius works in thick acrylic on a coarse canvas whose woven texture is left deliberately visible, lending the surface a handmade, tapestry-like quality. Colour is laid down in dense impasto ridges with a palette knife, then knit together with quick brush gestures, so that crowds and clouds alike are composed of countless individual marks that resolve into a coherent scene only as the viewer steps back.
