About the Work

Roar of the Crowd plunges the viewer into the throat of a floodlit stadium at night. A huge Canadian flag billows up from the left, the lower ring of the bowl carries the word 'CANADA', and tens of thousands of fans dissolve into a dark, glittering swell beneath the 'Vancouver 2026' title and a skyline pricked with light. The pitch glows a cool green at the centre of the maelstrom.

Pius builds the scene almost entirely from gesture and contrast — slabs of shadow, sparks of stadium light, the slashing red and white of the flag. It is the loudest painting in the collection, an attempt to make paint itself shout. Where 'Seawall at Twilight' whispers, this canvas is the full-throated noise of a city that got the night it dreamed of.

Process & Technique

Maximum contrast drives this canvas: Pius blocks in deep near-black masses for the stands, then detonates them with thick strokes of stadium-light gold and the bold red-and-white of the flag. The crowd is pure texture — hundreds of raised impasto flecks — and the green pitch is kept smooth and luminous to read as the calm eye of the storm.
