About the Work

Granville Island Rally captures the tournament spilling joyfully into one of Vancouver's most beloved corners. Beneath a marquee crowned with a golden cup, the market street runs in a blaze of orange light past awnings of red, teal and blue, and at its centre a knot of supporters carries a white banner emblazoned with the championship trophy. Shoppers pause between produce stalls and studio doors to watch the little procession pass, while the towers of downtown shimmer far off at the street's end.

Pius delights in the collision of the everyday and the extraordinary: the same lane that sells bread and cut flowers becomes, for one afternoon, a parade route. The composition funnels the eye down the sun-struck pavement to the distant city, suggesting that the celebration flows from this small island straight into the heart of Vancouver.

Process & Technique

The work is acrylic on textured canvas, its street laid in with broad knife-strokes of cadmium orange and burnt sienna, then cooled with violet shadow. Awnings and figures are picked out in dense, buttery impasto whose ridges catch real light, giving the market its festival sparkle; the sky is feathered in with quick directional brushwork to keep the whole scene in motion.
