Beneath the Millennium Gate

About the Work

Beneath the Millennium Gate sets the championship's street-level joy in the heart of Vancouver's Chinatown. The gate rises in tiers of slate-blue roof and vermilion column, its gilded calligraphy catching the afternoon sun, while the avenue beneath runs busy with pedestrians, tournament banners and a striped street-food cart sheltering under a red umbrella. Through the arch, the street recedes toward the hazy blue of the mountains, stitching neighbourhood, city and landscape into a single view.

Pius composes the scene as a series of thresholds — foreground bustle, framed passage, distant peaks — inviting the viewer to walk through the painting the way a visitor walks through the gate itself. It is a picture about welcome: an historic doorway standing open during the biggest summer the city has known.

Process & Technique

The artist works acrylic over a warm ochre ground on textured board, letting that underglow breathe through the street and figures. The gate's architecture is drawn with a fine brush over knifed masses of colour, its reds deepened with glazes, while foliage and crowd are flicked in with rapid, confetti-like touches that keep the intersection humming.
