About the Work

Heritage Harbour looks back even as it celebrates the present. A small group leans on a timber pier — one in a 'Canada 26' jersey — gazing across calm water toward a cedar longhouse and a richly carved totem pole, while a paddle-wheeler trails smoke and canoes drift among the moorings. Banner poles fly the maple leaf, and a hand-lettered wooden sign reading 'VANCOUVER 2026' spans the foreground rail.

Pius weaves the tournament's iconography together with the deeper story of the coast, setting host-city flags beside Indigenous and pioneer landmarks. The autumnal palette of rust, ochre and deep forest green gives the scene the glow of memory. It is the collection's most reflective work, honouring the land and history the festival summer is built upon.

Process & Technique

The richest, most layered surface of the group, this canvas is built from warm earth tones glazed and then loaded with impasto highlights. Pius carves the totem and longhouse detail with the knife tip, while keeping the water in smoother, cooler strokes so the carved cedar and timber pier feel solid and close at hand.
