Championship Sunset

About the Work

Championship Sunset lets the tournament fall silent for one incandescent minute. Along a boardwalk rail, families and couples stand in dark relief against a sky gone entirely to fire — bands of tangerine, rose and gold streaming from a white sun that hangs just above the water. Phones are raised, a child points, long violet shadows spill back across the planks. A lamppost at the right carries a '2026' trophy banner, the only reminder that this crowd first gathered for football.

Pius composes the scene as pure spectacle-within-spectacle: people who came for a match, caught instead by the oldest show on the coast. The banner's small gold echoes the sun's great gold, quietly suggesting the two glories share a metal. Of all the works in the Vancouver suite, this is the one about looking up.

Process & Technique

The sunset is constructed in acrylic on coarse board from dozens of long, loaded knife-strokes pulled horizontally — each band a distinct mix laid unblended so the sky vibrates. Figures are near-black glazes over that heat, edged with a single rim of orange light, and the boardwalk's shadows are dragged in thin violet washes that let the canvas tooth glitter through.
