About the Work

Waterfront Cheers gathers a knot of supporters on a sunlit harbour plaza, one fan's jersey reading 'CANADA 26' as the group looks out over the festivities. Tall banner poles fly the maple leaf and a 'Vanc 2026 Host City' standard, a compass rose is inlaid into the stone underfoot, and across the water a low modern pavilion sits beneath forested slopes and a drifting plume of steam. The 'VANCOUVER 2026' title runs crisply along the top edge.

The scene is intimate where the stadium pieces are vast — a handful of friends rather than a multitude. Pius uses the plaza's radiating compass lines to pull the eye into depth, and scatters small painterly incidents that reward close looking. It is a portrait of the city at ground level, welcoming the world one small gathering at a time.

Process & Technique

Pius draws the plaza's perspective with incised compass lines, then builds the figures in compact, sculptural dabs of acrylic. The banner poles and flags are picked out in crisp impasto against a more thinly washed harbour, and the textured canvas weave is allowed to show through the paving, giving the foreground a tactile, sun-warmed grain.
