The Watch Party
About the Work
The Watch Party pours the tournament's biggest moment into the warm bowl of a neighbourhood patio. Under strings of café lights and canvas umbrellas, every chair is turned toward the screen at the rail, where — in miniature, in broadcast glow — players in red hoist the golden cup inside a distant stadium. A 'Venue Partner' marquee shines over the door, servers thread between crowded wooden tables, and beyond the deck the harbour, the mountains and a faintly swirling night sky carry the celebration out to the horizon.
Pius paints the geography of fandom: most of the world watches its finals not from stadium seats but from exactly this kind of borrowed living room. The screen is small in the composition and enormous in every mind on that deck. Warmth is the painting's true subject — of bulbs, of bodies, of a city leaning together toward one bright rectangle.
Process & Technique
Acrylic on textured canvas, keyed to artificial light: ambers and honey tones laid in overlapping glazes so the patio seems lit from within the paint. Figures are clustered silhouettes with single highlights on shoulders and glasses, and the screen is rendered in flat, luminous strokes so it reads as the one machine-made light in a handmade night.
